Please comment on the draft plan:

Towards a KHS Alumni Association in 2021

Phase I – Preparation – establish a working group or steering committee 


Establish a core group to begin planning more structured engagement with KHS alumni, with the goal of creating a formal alumni organisation by 2021

• convene an informal working group of interested alumni to get an organisation together

• identify key roles and responsibilities, take stock of what skills we have already and what we need to recruit in 

• figure out communication protocols – a FB group, email distro list, phone/skype numbers

• schedule a skype or similar teleconference for early discussions

• meet with the school principal, careers adviser, parents and teacher association, students and other stakeholders for input

• identify POCs at school - teacher, careers adviser, school captains, and interested alumni, Rotary etc.

Draft Vision Statement

Inspire the next generation of KHS students and help them achieve their potential through establishing a formal KHS alumni organisation and delivering a program of activities.

Timeline: first quarter 2020 

Phase II – Quick wins over 2020


Generate interest and buy-in with a few key activities over 2020, while working on the bigger plan.

Possible activities:

Funding and legal (the boring, important stuff)
• Consider how best to legally constitute the group

• Consider financial status of the group, bank accounts, donations etc.


Outreach

• Set up an official KHS Alumni Facebook page

• Invite alumni to register

• publish a short piece in local newspaper about plans for an alumni organisation


Website

• Begin work on a website

• Enable alumni to register so we can gather info on their interests/availability to assist activity (i.e. names, emails, phone numbers, years at KHS, current role, city/region etc.)


Update to KHS website / newsletter

• Include a section on the website, directing alumni to the (informal, at this stage) FB group

• Include a section for alumni in each KHS newsletter (could include profiles, correspondence from alumni abroad)


Drop-in talks with KHS Year 12 students

• alumni drop-in talks to school

• could be based around themes (leadership, sports, trades, university education, working overseas, etc.)

• talk to careers adviser about what would be beneficial

Timeline: draft constitution or similar ready by end 2020, plans for an alumni association socialised with school and existing informal (year group) alumni, several alumni returned to school (or videoconference in) for career talks or similar.

Phase III – KHS Alumni Association est. 2021

Formalise the structure and implement a program over 2021

Ideas to develop:

Funding and legal (boring, important stuff)

• develop foundational document to enshrine legal status

• formalise committee structure and nominate office-bearers

• hold meetings (twice yearly?)

• formalise communication and outreach platforms (website, FB, secure database)


KHS global network

• survey alumni to identify what roles former students could play

- a role for alumni in universities, private sector or elsewhere to provide talks on study, careers at KHS

- potential for virtual careers talks via Skype/video conference with careers adviser and students

- identify contact points from each year group, encourage them to organise their own year group and support reunions, participation in alumni activities


Donations and scholarships

• Identify (or establish) a fund that alumni can contribute to, whether it is a scholarships fund, or other way to contribute to the school

• Note Rotary and other groups have scholarships and could provide advice or share mechanisms


Mentoring Program
• Set up a formal mentoring program for graduates to help them transition to university or vocational study, etc.


Timeline: Establish formal organisation by end 2021

Several alumni from 2001 are working to get some early activities underway in 2020: 1. Get the steering committee up and running.   We've got an email group and invite other alumni to join us. Leave a comment if you're interested to join the steering committee, or contact Murray over Facebook.  2. Reach out to KHS community and alumni.  This is underway. I've met with the principal, careers adviser and other staff in March 2020. The next meetings are expected in April 2020. The principal has discussed the proposal with staff, and will raise it with the P&C in March. We're working at some messages for reaching out to alumni. 3. Dear KHS community Below is a brief rationale and some initial ideas for establishing a formal alumni association.
